The loop behind every urge

Dr Jana Kovač · 5 min · 2026-05-14

Every dependency, from nicotine to the endless feed, runs on the same circuit: a trigger, a routine, a reward. The trigger fires, the routine runs, the reward lands, and the loop carves itself a little deeper.

The mistake people make is attacking the routine with willpower alone. Willpower is a battery, and triggers do not run out of charge. By evening the battery is flat and the loop wins.

What actually works is mapping. Write down the trigger the moment you notice it: the time, the place, the feeling just before. Within two weeks a pattern appears, and it is almost never what people expect. The cigarette is not about nicotine at eleven in the morning. It is about escaping a desk.

Once the real reward is visible, you can redesign the routine to deliver it another way. Same trigger, same reward, different middle. That is not a trick, it is the mechanism the loop was built on, pointed in a new direction.

The loop journal on Mental Health walks this exact process, one loop at a time. And when an urge hits before the map is done, the urge timer rides it out with you, minute by minute. Urges peak and fall. They always fall.
