Waking at three in the morning

Waking in the small hours is not broken sleep. It is a normal arousal between sleep cycles that your brain has learned to escalate. Everyone surfaces briefly at night. The difference is what happens in the next ninety seconds.

If the surfacing meets a calm brain, you sink back under without ever remembering it. If it meets a brain trained to check the time, calculate remaining hours and start worrying, the stress response fires and now you are properly awake.

The single most effective change is removing the clock. Not turning it around. Removing it. The time is information you cannot use at three in the morning, and checking it is the match that lights the fire.

Second: if you are awake more than roughly twenty minutes, leave the bed. Sit somewhere dim, do something dull, return when heaviness arrives. This protects the bed as a place where sleeping happens, which matters more than any supplement.

Third, and hardest to hear: alcohol in the evening is the most common cause of the three am wake up. It sedates you into the first half of the night and bills you for it in the second half.

The fourteen night reset on Sleep and Energy measures this pattern instead of guessing at it. One card each night, one short log each morning.
